My Mother's Apple Pie
Serve this one warm with... or without cheese. Yum!
| 6-8 | apples | |
| 1 | pie shell | |
| 3/4 cup | brown sugar | |
| 1/4 cup | hot water | |
| 1 | egg | |
| 3/4 cup | graham cracker crumbs | |
| 1/4 cup | pastry flour | |
| 1 tsp | cinnamon | |
| 1/4 tsp | freshly ground nutmeg | |
| 1/8 tsp | ground ginger | |
| 4 Tbsp | shortening, buttor or margarine |
- Line a 9" pie plate with a pastry of your choice or simply grease your pyrex plate.
- My mother peeled 6-8 apples; I don't peel mine. Core, and cut into 8 sections lengthwise, and set them attractively into the unbaked pie shell, or no shell.
- Mix together 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup hot water.
- Add the well beaten egg.
- Pour this mixture over the apples.
- Mix together 3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs, 1/4 cup pastry flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg, 1/8 tsp. ground ginger, and 4 T. shortening, butter or margarine. Sprinkle over the apples.
- Bake in a 450'F oven until it starts to brown, approximately 20 minutes.
- Reduce heat to 325'F and continue baking another 20 minutes.
- Serve warm with or without cheese.
